LON Gallery proudly presents Kate Ellis’ third solo exhibition with the gallery, Soft.

LON Gallery is pleased to present Soft, a major exhibition by Naarm/Melbourne artist Kate Ellis, with a new body of work that marks an ambitious continuation of the artist’s investigation into the unstable boundaries between human and animal, beauty and repulsion, care and violence.

Over three decades, Ellis has developed a distinctive language of hybrid and fragmented bodies. Her sculptures are at once alluring and unsettling, occupying ambiguous states that resist rationalised ideas of what a body should be. In Soft, these longstanding concerns are pushed into a new register through a heightened sense of scale, materiality and physical vulnerability.

Soft represents a significant moment in Kate Ellis’ practice; a culmination of ideas developed over decades, reconfigured at an ambitious scale and with a new intensity.

Kate Ellis holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Applied Science from the Lincoln Institute of Health Services. She has a significant exhibition practice, with solo exhibitions at many galleries including LON Gallery, CAVES, Arc One and Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces. Selected group exhibitions include outings at Western Plains Cultural Centre, Spring 1883, Martin Brown Fine Art Sydney, Sculpture Square (Singapore), RMIT Project Space, Linden Arts Centre, Bundoora Park Homestead, Geelong Art Gallery, Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery, La Trobe Regional Art Gallery and Ballarat Art Gallery. Ellis was the Winner of the Deakin University Small Sculpture Award, the Darebin/LaTrobe Art Prize, and the National Gallery Women’s Association Award. Her work is held in the collections of several major institutions including Deakin University, Artbank and La Trobe University.
