Casey Jeffery taps into personal histories to explore universal themes of migrant experiences and the psychology of post-war suburban Australian vernacular. Often occupying space between figuration and abstraction, these paintings employ trompe l’oeil methodologies, which speak both to the history of painting, as well as the complex and rich symbolism imbued in the fabrics and scenes which they depict. The textiles in Jeffery’s works are largely heirlooms, passed down to her, by her Nonno, a first-generation Italian post war migrant, who settled in suburban Melbourne in 1951.
Casey Jeffery received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from the Victorian College of the Arts and has an extensive exhibition history spanning public, non profit and private galleries in Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand. This includes exhibitions at LON, Town Hall Gallery, Bayside Gallery, Sarah Scout Presents, Castlemaine Art Museum, Linden New Art, West Space, TCB Art Inc, Conners Conners, MARS, and {Suite}. Her work has been presented at numerous art fairs in Australia, including SPRING 1883, Quarantine Art Fair and Sydney Contemporary. In addition to producing exhibitions for galleries, Jeffery has created public artworks for the City of Stonnington and the City of Melbourne through the Metro Tunnel Project. Jeffery has also been the recipient of several esteemed prizes and awards including The Macfarlane Fund Residency, The Fiona Myer Award, The John Vickery Scholarship and a West Space Mentorship; her work is held in the Artbank, RACV and Stevenson collections.
